Air is a gas mixture mainly of Oxygen & Nitrogen.
Approximately 21% is Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen..
However as the Oxygen percentage increases from 20% to 100% & the risk of a fire increases dramatically.
As the cylinder shoulder label below indicates oxygen is not flammable but is an oxidising gas.
This means it does not burn on its own but is highly reactive & supports combustion.
It actually accelerates combustion of anything near it that will burn.
Like many gases, Oxygen gas is invisible and has the following main properties:
- Colourless
- Odourless
- Tasteless
- Oxidising gas (Indicated by the centre yellow diamond on the Cylinder shoulder label) It is slightly denser than air having a density of 1.36 kg/m3 (i.e. 1.1 relative to air at sea level atmospheric conditions)
Applications
- Oxy-acetylene welding
- Oxy-acetylene cutting
- Flame heat treatment
- Chemical industry processes
- Flame hardening
- Water treatment
Hazards
Oxygen is highly reactive (i.e. Oxidising.) and can cause fire hazards due to an increased risk of igniting combustible materials.
Thus, care needs to be taken with oxygen gas as things that normally do not burn in air can do so in a high or 100% Oxygen gas cloud.
